 About the Book

Far superior, oddly enough, to the other anthology of French poetry edited by Martin Sorrell that Ive recently read, Elles: A Bilingual Anthology of Modern French Poetry by Women. I think its because here each poet gets more breathing space, so to speak, more pages to show what theyre made of. Plus, the book closes with excerpts from three of my all-time favorite poets, which helps severely, and, while theyre all poems/excerpts/fragments that Ive already read in translation before, the contents herein are all translated by Sorrell, who does a fine job. While I do very much love & have investment in the translations of Keith Waldrop, Norma Cole & Cid Corman respectively, I appreciate a second translation to compare, as of course none of these translations are literally the original French (its also really nice to have the original French in this collection. I was also thrilled to discover Marie-Claire Bancquart. An imperfect book (due to personal taste) because Im still not as keen on French poetry from the first half of the 20th century as I am that of the second.Poets included:Jules SuperviellePierre McOrlanRobert DesnosJacques PrevertLouise HerlinPhilippe JaccottetJoyce MansourMarie-Claire BancquartAnne-Marie AlbiachDanielle CollobertJean Daive
